In this land time seems to stand still. Golden Burma – tropical, mountainous, devotional. A multi-people state with more than 150 ethnic groups, and hundreds of thousands monks in thousands and thousands of monasteries. Foreigners are appreciated only recently. Since more than 40 years the land is ruled by the generals. They kept Burma – which they call Myanmar – under lock and key, and ran it down to one of the poorest countries of the world.
The Burmese’s handling of life, capacity of suffering, curiosity, and joy – despite adverse circumstances – deeply impressed me, and eventually led to this photo project. Since my first travels in 2005 I visit Burma on a regular basis – each year for a couple of weeks.
Some of my pictures have already been published on GEO.de (see www.geo.de/burma) and have been presented to a larger audience in various photo exhibitions.
